For Gen Z, the answer might not be as simple as “whoever pays more.”

Our research points towards a growing tension between financial security and the kind of life that comes with earning that money. Poor employer reputation can mean companies have to offer higher salaries to attract people, while companies with stronger reputations may attract talent without competing purely on pay.

And honestly, it makes sense.

A bigger paycheck sounds great until you're spending most of it trying to recover from your job. 😭

For someone entering the workforce, things like workplace culture, flexibility, reputation and whether the job leaves them with an actual life can matter alongside the salary.

Because “good salary” and “good job” aren't necessarily the same thing.

Maybe the real question isn't:

“How much does this job pay?”

It's:

“What am I going to have to give up to earn it?”
